Baking Prowess...Or Maybe Not

Tonight I decided to bake cookies. I've been dreaming of baking cookies for days now so I scrounged around inside my pantry this evening to see what I had and then I looked online for a cookie recipe.

I found what seemed to be a worthy recipe and I decided to have a go. After I had two dozen cookies in the oven I decided to taste the dough once more and realized that something wasn't quite right. My roommate decided that it needed more salt and after checking the recipe, I realized that although I put in the right amount, it definitely wasn't enough. Great, now I had two dozen cookies that were pretty much worthless because they really didn't taste much like anything at all.

That's when I had a brilliant idea. So after I took the cookies out of the oven and layed them on the tray to cool I got out my salt mill. It's one of those all in one salt mills that has the salt on one end and the pepper on the other. I decided to sprinkle some salt on top of the cookies before they cooled off and so I grabbed my salt mill and went to town turning the bottom. I was practically dancing as I made sure I got every cookie real good. I got real into turning that little mill.

Then I stopped. Something didn't seem right. I never turned the bottom of my salt shaker to get the salt out before... No, I always shook it upside down. That's when I realized, I wasn't turning out salt. I was turning out fresh pepper all over my freshly baked cookies. BAHHHHH!

That's when I exploded with laughter at my obliviousness. I couldn't believe I did that. All the while I was baking I was also thinking about how I would bring some of the cookies on my hike tomorrow with my friend. I imagined how he would be so impressed with my baking prowess and would exclaim, "Wow Colleen, these cookies are delicious! You're a fantastic baker!" And then I would pretend to be all shy and stuff as if it came naturally.

But it doesn't come naturally. I'm a lousy baker. I get it right about half the time and the other half ends up in the garbage. Move over Suzie Homemaker and Betty Crocker, here comes Amelia Bedelia.

You make me laugh, Colleen! Cooking is definitely much easier than baking. Cooking allows room for improvisation & experimentation, and can be forgiving. Baking is an precise science. In this case, I would just blame the recipe for misguiding you. ;-)
